Half-hourly meters record your business energy usage every 30 minutes. Readings are sent back to your supplier via a mobile signal or fixed phone line.

Taking readings every 30 minutes isn’t overkill—it’s actually the smartest way to get accurate bills, spot energy wastage, and take control of your spending.

Who’s it for?

Its legally required if you use 100,000 kWh or more per year.
Optional—but highly recommended—if you’re getting close.

Why it matters:

  • You get exact billing, not estimates
  • You can get regular data which will help you identify wasted energy patterns (like machinery left running overnight, lights not automatically switched off or faulty equipment)
  • You can use your half-hourly data to negotiate better deals with suppliers

How do I know if I have a half hourly meter also known as a HH or 00 meter? Just look at your latest invoice. There will be a reference number called an MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number). The Top Line of this reference number will be two numbers followed by three numbers followed by three numbers (or a letter and two number). Below that will be the main MPAN which is 13 numbers long.

If the first two numbers of the Top Line are 00 then you have a half hourly meter.

If the first two numbers are 01 or 02 then it is a residential supply, 03 or 04 denotes a non-half hourly business supply.

Even if you aren’t a big user and don’t require a half-hourly meter then switching from a standard non-half hourly meter to a smart meter also has its advantages. Accurate bills and time saved not having to submit manual meter readings are worth the small inconvenience of having an engineer come to your property and switch off the power for a short period of time to install the smart meter.
